Family Fun - Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day and Spring are both upon us! Both events bring flowers to mind. While fresh flowers are absolutely wonderful and brighten and fragrance the room they do pass in about a week.
Our craft this week will last much longer than a week and with your choice of colors and flowers can be made perfectly appropriate for every season and every reason! It’s really a mixed media craft.
Here’s what you need:
- Hair dryer or heat gun
- Stiff cardboard or mat board
- Small selection of silk flowers & leaves
- 9 Crayons
- Glue or glue gun
- Ribbon
- Newspaper
Here’s how:
Decide the layout of your cardboard. Portrait or landscape. Find the center and lay out your crayons. Make small mark as a beginning guide. With either glue or your glue gun attach the crayons even with the end of your board. If you have used Elmer’s glue you may have to wait for the glue to dry.
Grab that hairdryer and let’s get messy! I did this with a piece of newspaper on the table to help catch any potential drips of hot wax. We have a heat gun here at the shop so this was a fast melt. Hold your heat source over then pointy tips of the crayons and let the hot wax drip down the board. These cool wax trails will become your stems. It’s ok to tip your board to get the wax to drip in the direction that you want. Depending on the types of crayons you chose them might drip at different rates. We used Crayola and the ones that you get at a resturant when they want to keep restless children (like me) busy!
Give that wax just a minute or two to set up. Now start placing your silk flowers into a pleasing arrangement. Don’t forget to add a leaf or two. When you are happy with your arrangement glue the flowers in place.
You can see at the top of the board there is plenty of room to write a nice message.
Hot gue a bit of ribbon to hang your new wonderful creation.
Happy Mother’s Day!
