While the winter and early spring have been warm, mother nature threw Timberlin Golf Course a curve ball with a late spring snow storm.
That hasn’t deterred Timberlin from being open as late and as early in the golf seasons as it has in history. Play is up and course conditions are lush.
“We were open until Dec. 28 and re-opened on March 8 so it was a long season and a very short off-season,” said Timberlin’s PGA golf professional Mark Bayram. “This is my sixth year and this is by far the best conditions we’ve had to start the year. We definitely needed the rain because we were pretty dry but conditions are great.”
Marc Bayram, a New Britain native, is the head golf professional at Timberlin since 2011. Before that, he played college golf at St. Leo in Florida. He has worked at Plantation Palms Golf Club in Land O’ Lakes, Florida, Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington and now Timberlin.
In 2015, Bayram was chosen by his peers as the winner of the CT Section PGA Youth Player Development Award given to a Golf Professional who is a leader in junior golf and who reflects the ideals of those who work with youth.
As Head Golf Professional at Timberlin Golf Club, his goal is to create an atmosphere that allows patrons to feel proud to call Timberlin home. He resides in Berlin, with sons Marc and Max.
One of the things Bayram is proudest of is the success of the Berlin High School boys and girls golf teams, who play out of Timberlin and are perennial state championship contenders.
“It’s incredible the success the high school teams are having, especially the girls winning the state championship four of the last five years,” he said. “It’s a dynasty. The teams have always been good but the streak they are on now is incredible.
“We had a junior clinic over the vacation and had 24 golfers and I’m seeing a lot more girls coming to them. We started these clinics when I first got here and some kids that were in the clinics are now freshmen on the high school team and made the team.”
Timberlin features many specials during the spring and fall, for golfers of all abilities. Right now, golfers can play during the day for anywhere from $21 to $40 depending on the time they want to hit the links.

Timberlin is also a great place to host an outing, from 12 to 244. Several major tournaments call Timberlin home. The Joseph Manzi Tournament as well as the Ryan T. Lee tournament have been sell-outs since their inception.
Timberlin has been chosen by the CJSA this golf season to play host a New /England Amateur qualifying tournament. The top players from this tournament will advance to the prestigious New England Amateur.
“The New England Amateur is at Hartford Golf Club this year so the CJSA wanted to have the qualifier in Connecticut and they asked us to host,” Bayram said. “Not many public golf courses are asked to host these events and for us to be mentioned in the same breath as Hartford Golf Club is a huge compliment. I think they choose us because we have a championship golf course. There are 18 great holes here with no tricks but it’s tough. You don’t see too many people go low out here but it’s fair to golfers of all skill levels.”
The largest men’s club in the state of Connecticut can also be found at Timberlin. If you are interested in joining the club, you can click on www.timberlingc.com.
“I grew up playing at Stanley in New Britain and the people there made it specials,” Bayram said. “I have enjoyed the people here and they make it special, as well. It’s my job to keep that going.”
Bayram is also available for instruction. To schedule a lesson, ask about group lessons or youth golf, call 860-828-3228.
