On April 24, 2024 the New Britain Fire Department (NBFD) responded at 8:09 p.m. to report of a rear porch fire at 171 Wilcox St. in New Britain. Engine 1 was on scene 4 minutes later at 8:13 p.m. The first on-scene company reported a working structure fire with the rear porches fully involved in fire.

The rear porches sustained heavy damage and with the living units incurring moderate to slight damage.

The building was a three-story wood frame building with one apartment per floor. All apartments were occupied at the time of the fire. The first floor tenant was not home when the fire started. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

Thirteen occupants were displaced from the building. The American Red Cross responded and provided assistance to the family members.

A Second Alarm was transmitted bringing a total of six fire companies to the scene. Engine companies 1, 5, 2, 7 and Ladders 1 and 2 and Deputy Chief / Shift Commander responded to the fire. Twenty firefighters fought the blaze. Mutual aid from the West Hartford Fire Department assisted in providing city-wide protection during the firefighting operations.

The fire was declared under control at 9:11 p.m.

“Firefighters did an excellent job quickly and aggressively attacking the main body of fire on the rear porches. Their actions prevented further spread of fire into the apartments. The fire video illustrates the speed and aggressiveness of the fire encountered by firefighters”, stated Fire Chief Thomas Ronalter.

The New Britain Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the cause of the fire.
