Euro-American Stays Home and Expands in Berlin

Euro-American Connections & Homecare, Connecticut’s live-in and hourly homecare leader, celebrated its new location and headquarters at 1436 Berlin Turnpike in Berlin with a ribbon cutting on April 11th, attended by Mayor Mark Kaczynski, DCP Commissioner Jonathan Harris and other dignitaries. Beginning with a vacant and tired building, its owner, Maggie Drag, and her team turned it into a showplace.

Maggie left Poland at 19 years old for the United States. She spoke no English but was determined to succeed. She worked in a factory at night, attended high school by day, and taught herself English. She would often go to local shopping centers and churches and place job listing flyers on cars. The area was brimming with Polish immigrants looking for work. Maggie found jobs for many of these people as nannies, housekeepers or other domestic help. From these efforts grew Euro-American Connections & Homecare. Providing a complete and comprehensive array of services for the elderly and disabled, they now have over 100 employees.

“We are happy to see that Maggie has decided to expand her firm and is investing in Berlin. The incredible growth, from an idea in 1989 to now having over 100 employees, highlights the entrepreneurial spirit we see in so many Berlin businesses.”, explained Mayor Mark Kaczynski.

Maggie used the valuable lessons she learned during her first years in America to help many people from Poland and other Eastern-European countries apply for work, understand government forms, earn driver’s licenses, learn English, receive medical services and work with social service agencies. The majority of Euro-American’s caregivers are from Eastern Europe, where they grew up caring for their family members. Most households there include three generations (grandparents, parents and children) who care for each other. There’s little need for nursing homes or assisted living communities.

Euro-American caregivers bring that culture of care, dignity and family to all of their clients.

They don’t see care-giving as a job; for them it’s a lifestyle.
