Dulces Cupcake Café at 50 West Main St. in downtown New Britain has a lot more than just cupcakes.
Dulces Café, recently celebrating its first anniversary, also has coffee, tea, hot chocolate and juices, breakfast and lunch sandwiches and great bagels, croissants and English muffins with all the fixings you could want. The Café, across the street from City Hall, also makes cakes, brownies, muffins and breads. To top it all off they have ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies and cookies.
Carmen Ellison a New Britain native, who works at City Hall, was working on the idea long before Leaves and Pages closed across the street. Ellison has been working for the City for 26 years, currently as the Revenue Department Tax Specialist aka Assistant to the Tax Collector.
Her daughters Keila Navarro and Cassandra Navarro work at Dulces. She has three other stepdaughters. Her husband Michael Ellison is also part of the business. He works for the City as the Parking Enforcement Officer.
Ellison’s parents moved from Framingham Massachusetts to New Britain when she was 11 and she’s been here ever since. She loves New Britain and the diversity here and wanted to open her business here. She hopes that with time that decision will pay off. Dulces means sweets in Spanish and that was what she was hoping to bring to New Britain. When you go there you will see that she accomplished her goal.
Sandwiches include breakfast sandwiches, chicken club, pulled pork, BLTs, Deli sandwiches and steak and cheese. Or you can get a house salad or soup of the day. And don’t forget the bread pudding, rice pudding, zucchini bread, and banana nut bread. And there are lunch combo specials too.
Dulces serves Puerto Rican coffee sent from the mountains of Puerto Rico. It’s called Cafe Lareño and they also serve Cafe Bustelo which is popular in our Hispanic community. Local Omar coffees include: Breakfast Blend, Jamaican Me Crazy, Caramel Mocha, French Vanilla, Espresso and Columbian Decaf. They also pick out special blends that are produced for different holidays, like Irish Cream available now for St. Patrick’s Day.
Dulces is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The Café is not open on Sundays. Dulces will make special cakes for you and does have a delivery service. Dulces will also cater your affairs or special occasions.
