Family Fun!

Nature collage! Since we still have no snow in sight and so many great hiking trails are open both in New Britain and Berlin it’s a great time to go out and take a hike!
Bring a collecting bag with you. Better yet give everyone their own bag. A pair of snips might come in handy for the wood stems.
Keep your eye out for the interesting seed pods. Milk weed pods contort into such interesting shapes and they may still have a bit of fluff clinging to the pod with a few seeds. They are fun to pull out and blow into the wind! Save a few for your bag!
Take a walk through a meadow and see what kinds of plants are toughing out what is our normally cold and snowy New England winter. Gather at will making sure that you do not remove the roots or damage and shrubs. What kind of leaves will you find? Will you have to call upon Google to identify?
After everyone has had a good dose of fresh air and a long stretch of winter legs bring those full bags home and dump them out on the table. How many plants and seeds can you identify? Oaks, maples and willow should be the easy ones.
We made beautiful collages by arranging our materials on contact paper. There is no end to the beautiful designs either placed carefully or random all looks great! When you are satisfied with your design place another piece of clear contact paper over it and press gently to seal. We used a paper punch to pop holes in and wove yarn through the holes. The designs look beautiful hanging in the window!
