Hot on the heels of two successful productions, Winnie-the-Pooh and A Christmas Carol, New Britain Youth Theater is announcing auditions for two new shows to be performed in the spring—Honk! Jr for ages 8 to 14, and Penny & the Pirates for ages 6 to 9.

Penny & the Pirates is an original play, by the writers of last season’s Unlocked: The True Story of Rapunzel, about a young girl who joins a band of pirates on an adventure to find an unusual buried treasure! Auditions for children ages 6 through 9 are on Monday, January 25, and Thursday, January 28 at NBYT at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA at 50 High Street in New Britain (next to the library). Audition times both days begin at 6:00 p.m. and no preparation is required. Rehearsal days are scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays, but are subject to change. The production will be performed at the same location on April 8, 9, and 10.

Honk! Jr is a “quackingly good” musical adaptation, by the writers of new music for Broadway’s Mary Poppins, of The Ugly Duckling, one of the most beloved fables about the challenges and victories of being different. Auditions for children ages 8 through 14 are on Thursdays, January 14 and 21, at Holmes Elementary School at 2150 Stanley Street in New Britain (off Hartford Road (Route71) near West Farms Mall)). Audition times both days begin at 6:00 p.m. Children auditioning should prepare a musical theater song and bring sheet music if possible, or they will be given a song to sing. Rehearsals will also be on Monday and Thursday evenings. The production will be performed at the same location on April 29, 30 and May 1.

Boys and girls of all levels of experience are welcome for both productions. All those auditioning will meet in groups with the director and will be asked to read or repeat lines from the play (and will sing for Honk! Jr). To schedule an audition, call (860) 515-8115 or email [email protected]. Pre-scheduled auditions at 6 or 7 p.m. are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. Those cast will be asked to pay a participation fee of $75 for Penny & the Pirates and $100 for the musical Honk! Jr. No child or family, however, will be turned away for inability to pay, so please ask about financial assistance if necessary. Older children age 13 and up may also contact NBYT with interest in helping backstage.
