Winter Dog Obedience Classes Offered

The Berlin Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for residents beginning on Nov. 30 and non-residents Dec. 7. Registration forms can be obtained on the town’s website www.town.berlin.ct.us to mail in or to register in person. Register at the Berlin Parks and Recreation Office, 230 Kensington Road, Berlin CT 06037.

New Online registration call the Parks and Recreation Office 860-828-7009 for a username and password to register online.

Instructor for the classes is Wendy McGurgan, Professional Dog Trainer and Assistant Trainer All classes held at the former Pistol Creek Golf Course, 600 Spruce Brook Road, Berlin, CT. 06037. Dog handlers should be at least 16 years old. Please bring a copy of your dog’s vaccinations if not already on file to the first class including Bordetella. The first class for the Kindergarten Puppy and Basic Dog Obedience classes are held without the dog, leashes and collars will be discussed. There is a fee for residents and non-residents for all dog obedience classes.

Kindergarten Puppy Training Jan. 7th – Feb. 18th Thursdays, 6 – 7: p.m. 7 weeks The class is for puppies age two and half months to six months old. We will work on leash walking and the come, sit and down commands. Learn how to praise and correct your puppy appropriately. Address problems like chewing, housebreaking and crate training.

Basic Dog Obedience Jan. 5th – Feb. 16th Tuesdays, 6– 7 p.m. 7 weeks The class will cover basic commands, correcting bad habits, and learning how to praise, correct and discipline your dog appropriately. Dogs should be at least 6 months old.

Canine Manners Class Jan. 6th - Feb. 10th Wednesdays, 6– 7 p.m 6 weeks The class is offered to dogs and handlers that have successfully completed Basic Dog Obedience. Dogs and handlers should have a working knowledge of the basic commands. Because we will be indoors, emphasis will be on adapting obedience skills for use in everyday settings. We will use verbal and physical praise to regard our dogs, not food.
