Due to the resignation of Daniel Davis from the Board of Education, Miriam Geraci has been named to fill the open spot.

Davis resigned last week after being voted in as Alderman at Large for the Common Council.

Geraci, a Republican, fell short in her bid for Alderman in Ward 5.

“It’s a great honor the City Council is putting forth a resolution appointing me to fill the recent vacancy on the Board of Education,” said Geraci. “I’ve always been passionate about education and making our schools the best they can be. I’m excited to begin this term and bring some fresh new ideas to the table.”

Geraci is a 1992 graduate from New Britain High School and is employed as a Paralegal doing defense work for a major insurance company. She has also served as a Commissioner on the City’s Civil Service Commission.

Mayor Erin Stewart said, “Miriam, who is the parent to a daughter at New Britain High School, is a hardworking individual whose heart is set on doing what’s best for New Britain. Her passion and commitment to moving our city and school system forward will be a wonderful addition to the Board of Education.”

“My family has deep roots in the city as my grandmother was on the Board of Education, and my Great-grandparents founded the infamous chicken store, “Universal Poultry”, on Broad Street,” added Geraci. “I would like to see more of our students being educated within our school district. My daughter is a freshman at New Britain High School, enrolled in all honors classes, and the opportunities afforded her are limitless. One thing I am passionate about is our schools and the greatness of our teachers. Our children deserve only the best.”

The official vote takes place Thursday night at the Common Council meeting.
