Walnut Hill Park will be dog gone happy on July 15 during the first ever Pets-A-Palooza event. Presented by Mayor Erin E. Stewart, The New Britain Animal Welfare Commission and the New Britain Parks, Recreation and Community Services Departmen, it will take place from 5-9 p.m. (rain date July 16).
“This is going to be a big one. The commission on animal welfare had this great idea to a fair centered around pets,” said Stewart. “It’s awesome. It will be a great opportunity to showcase that we are a City that cares about our furry friends.”
Stewart said New Britain is presently doing great when it comes to taking care of dogs.
“We are putting up dogs for adoption left and right and our Saturdays are jammed pack (at the animal control),” she said. “The dogs are going up on Facebook and on Petfinder. We are night and day compared to where we were before.”
This Event Will Feature:
- A Live concert featuring Tirebiter from 7-9 p.m. at the Darius Miller Band Shell
- 1 mile fundraising walk—Pets are welcome!
- Radio appearances by Renee DeNino from the RIVER 105.9fm
- A Rescue Pet Parade
- A K-9 Frisbee Dog Show
- Pet grooming, mobile dog washing and nail trimming
- A variety of pet related booths
- New Britain Animal Control—Take Me Home Zone!
- Fidelco Puppy Meet and Greet
- City of New Britain Dog Licensing
- Inflatable Amusements
And there will be the opportunity for residents to be part of the Guinness World Records attempt for the most cat food collected in a public park.
Residents should pre-register for the walk through the New Britain Parks and Recreation Department’s website at www.NBParksNRec.org or in the New Britain Parks and Recreation Office. ($10 donation is suggested) or register the day of the event at Walnut Hill Park starting at 5 p.m.
The highest fundraiser will receive a gift and the first 50 registrants will receive a t-shirt. All registrants will be entered into a raffle.
The 1 mile Fundraising Walk begins at 5:45 p.m.
Rules of the Event:
For all participants, safety and enjoyment at Pets-A-Palooza, there are a few rules that everyone must follow:
1. If your pet gets nervous around large crowds, does not interact well with people/pets or is not a social pet, please leave them home.
2. Please clean up after your pet (bags provided). Failure to do so will result in immediate removal from the event.
3. Unruly participants will be asked to leave.
4. All pets MUST be kept on a leash—no longer than six (6) feet—or in an enclosure or enclosed in a pet-friendly enclosure (strollers, etc). Please no retractable leashes. Pets must be wearing a collar with proper ID at all times.
5. Pets must be up-to-date on all vaccinations.
6. No dogs in any stage of heat may participate.
7. No puppies under four months of age may attend.
8. Water for dogs is served community-style; if your dog requires a separate drinking container, please bring your own.
9. No children 12 and under are permitted to participate without an adult.
“We will do dog licensing. It is law to have that,” said Stewart. “A lot of people don’t do it, but it is needed if something happens to your pet. It is a no-brainer.”
