If hot buttered lobster and strawberry shortcake are two of your favorite foods then you will not want to miss Saturday’s Second Annual Lobster Roll/Strawberry Shortcake Festival on the Hill at Kensington Congregational Church in Kensington.
The event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“The church was celebrating the 300 anniversary of our civil war monument a few years and we had the lobster rolls and strawberry shortcake on a much smaller scale. It was met with much enthusiasm in the town and we decided to host it in a larger scale,” said Gwen McCann, organizer. “Each year we send our youth group on a fishing trip and that is where the money will go.”
The hot buttered lobster rolls will be $10. Also available will be farm to market fresh Angus beef and what the festival claims is the Best Bacon Cheese Burger in town. Fresh homemade strawberry shortcake with home style whip cream is only $5 at the Festival on The Hill.
Although great food is featured, the event also boasts a community celebration with music and various vendors. Civic organizations, school groups, local artisans, live music and more will line the church grounds.
“We invited a lot more vendors to make it an old time local feel. We are adding entertainment for children and families,” said McCann. “We are praying for nice weather. We have accommodations even if day is not perfect.”
Vendors include: New Britain Youth Museum’s Hungerford Nature Center (Hands-on Interactive Nature Program with reptiles and more), artisans selling their wares, SolarCity, homemade jams, soaps, jewelry and more. There will be free face painting and balloon sculpting by Upbeat of Berlin High School. Urban Oaks of New Britain will have an all-day farmer’s market. A bouncy house will be available for kids. Live music will be featured throughout the day.
The event will take place rain or shine and admission is free. The Kensington Congregational Church is located at 312 Percival Ave. in Kensington. Narrated tours of the historic Kensington Congregational Grounds will also take place.
The Kensington Congregational Church is over 300 years old. The current church was built in 1774. The oldest permanent Civil War monument in The United States, built in 1863, is on the church grounds. A 33 star flag, made in 1863 by women of the church, hangs inside the church. This year is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War’s end.
Ample free parking is available.
