Make yours at the library. We are kicking off summer in June with excitement and lots of activity. Our 2nd annual Summer Reading Bash happens on Wednesday, June 24, 10 am to 4 p.m., on the library’s front lawn. There will be a read-a-thon and lots of fun activities. The Friends of the Library will be selling children’s books. Find out about our summer reading clubs and sign up. There’s one for every age – kids, teens and adults. All with prizes – your reading should not go unrewarded. Our message is simple - read!
There is a variety of programming throughout the month. Check out our newly formed Chess Club which will meet twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. The first meet will be on Saturday, June 13, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Come learn to play or brush up on your chess skills.
There’s a Fathers’s Day Story/Craft for ages 3-8 on Thursday, June 18, 6:30 p.m. Make something special to give dad.
Come see for yourself that super heroes really do exist on Thursday, June 25, 6:30 pm. Join the fun with a mix of storytelling and experiments that make the characters’ super powers come to life as Sciencetellers present Super Heroes—Every Hero Has a Story, for ages 3-8, accompanied by an adult. Science will make the ordinary…extraordinary.
Two series will start in June. The first of our Sumer Music Series, Latin, Jazz, and Standards, will be on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m. with talented musicians, Sam Kimball and Joe Donato. Sam is a legend in our area, having played locally for many years. The second program in the music series is on Saturday, June 20, 2 p.m. Enzo Boscarino returns for another entertaining program, Enzo Boscarino How 2B Italian, illustrating the rich culture, history, traditions and music of Italy. Our other series coincides with our adult summer reading theme, “We All Need Heroes, We Can All Be Heroes”, a series of talks highlighting local heroes. On Saturday, June 24 at 6:30 pm. New Britain High School gym teacher and track coach, Darwin Shaw, will kick the series off with a talk about his experiences growing up in New Britain and the obstacles he overcame to become the success he is today as shares his book, Becoming Coach Shaw. A book signing will follow the talk. Copies of his book will be available to purchase.
Looking for a summer read? At the Friends of the Library’s Every Day Book Sale on the main floor of the library, the special categories for June are Maritime, fiction and nonfiction about all things nautical and Military History. The author of the month is David Baldacci and there will be many to choose from.
On Tuesday, June 23, the library will be closed for a Staff Development Day. The staff will be at work, enhancing their skills with a workshop. With our generous schedule of hours, it is a challenge to get staff together for these beneficial trainings which benefit both staff and library users. This gives all staff the opportunity to participate.
You don’t need to have a library card to attend any of the programs but why not get one if you haven’t yet. Library cards are free. Stop by with identification that lists both your name and New Britain address. Open up a world of new opportunities.
There are more programs planned. Check them all out at www.nbpl.info or in the library newsletter.
