The New Britain Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its annual Fishing Derby held at the pond in Stanley Quarter Park. The event is held in New Britain on Saturday, April 11th, from 9 a.m. to noon Participants 15 years of age and younger are eligible to register for the children’s division, people over the age of 16 must register in the adult division. Children registered by Friday, April 10th, 2015, receive a free gift bag the day of the derby (while supplies last). Participants that qualify for the children’s division and are not pre-registered must pay a $1 entry fee on the day of the Derby. Adult participants can pre-register for $8 or pay $10 on the day of the event. Registrants must supply their own rods, bait, and tackle to participate. Registration forms are available in the Parks and Recreation Office, Room 302, of City Hall. City Hall is located at 27 West Main Street in New Britain.

There are four children’s age groups: under 5 years of age, 5 to 8 years, 9 to 12 years, and 13 to 15 years of age. Prizes are awarded for the heaviest fish, longest fish, and the most fish caught (which means NO LIMITS!) in each specific age group.

Local businesses, clubs, and private donor contributions pay for the prizes won. We would like to thank those who donated to this year’s fishing derby: Lighthouse Family Worship Center, Big Little Bait and Tackle Shop, and Rowledge Pond Aquaculture. Lighthouse Family Worship Center donated a generous amount of fishing poles and tackle boxes! Big Little Bait and Tackle Shop donated bait and tackle and their time to the event; they will also be at the event to help children and adults bait their lines and answer any questions they may have about fishing! Rowledge Pond Aquaculture was very generous in donating five gift certificates, valued at $110 each, which are good for one child and one adult to take a fishing trip on the BlackHawk in Niantic! In addition to prizes for the division previously listed, children also have the chance to catch tagged fish. This year children who catch a tagged fish will receive a gift card to Cabela’s, the largest sporting goods store in Connecticut. Contributors for 2015 include Gold Level Sponsor: Oliver Stewart, Silver Level Sponsors: Vinci’s Catering & Concessions, Call Before You Dig, Inc., and Franco American War Veterans, and Bronze Level Sponsors: Gayle and Thomas West, Domenic and Filomena Formato, and Club 48 AC INC.
