Digital Magazines - Portable and Convenient
By Pat Rutkowski | New Britain Public Library Director at March 6, 2024 | 9:15 am | Print
Whether we are ready or not, the world continues to move to online services and digital offerings. You can rely on your library to guide and help you learn the process. And of course make it easier. Here’s your chance.
We are now offering downloadable magazines – magazines available on line which you can have sent to your electronic device to read. Magazines lend themselves well to digital as they are so visual. There will be a day in the future that some magazine titles will be available only online. Our new collection presently has 55 popular titles- including titles which are not in our library collection. A sample of the offerings – Knit, “O”, Better Homes and Gardens, Atlantic, Bloomberg’s Businessweek, Glamour, Good Housekeeping, Do It Yourself, Bicycling, Everyday with Rachael Ray, Backpacker, New Yorker, Macworld, Food Network Magazine, Family Handyman and HGTV magazine. Digital collections can be costly but we are able to offer this service through the consortium of libraries which we belong to.
You can find the downloadable collection from a link on our web page (ww.nbpl.info). Click on Downloadable Catalog on the top right menu.
Titles can be checked out for 7 days and borrowers can have up to a total of 4 items checked out at one time from the downloadable collection. Unlike the e-books, magazines can be borrowed by more than one library borrower at the same time so there is never any waiting. In order to download titles you will need an iPad, iPhone, Android tablet, Android phone, Windows 8 tablets, Windows 8 computer or a NOOK® device.
To start, you enter your library card number and sign in to a Barnes and Noble free Nook account. If you don’t have a Nook account you will be given the option to sign up for one. No credit card information is needed. Next step – you will need to download the Nook app. Downloading the app and signing up for an account will only need to be done one time. Next time, all you will need to do is pick your magazine after entering your library card number, sign in to your Barnes and Noble account and your magazine will be sent to your Nook app.
When you are ready to read the magazine, just open up the Nook app and the magazine will be waiting for your reading pleasure.
There are helpful instructions on how to checkout a magazine from the magazine page or you can stop by the library and ask our Information Desk librarians to walk you through it.
Take a look, check out the interesting titles and enjoy.
