St. John Paul II School, a Catholic pre-kindergarten through grade 8 school in New Britain, announced last week that it will be closing its doors at the end of the 2014-15 academic year since the sponsoring parish, Holy Cross, is no longer able to sustain the school.
After substantial, careful consultation with parish and school constituent groups, the pastor of the parish school made the decision to close the school at the conclusion of the current academic year.
“Although the closing of St. John Paul II School is unfortunate, we are committed to maintaining the vibrant presence of Catholic school education in the city of New Britain and the surrounding towns,” said Dr. Dale R. Hoyt, Superintendent of Catholic Schools. “There are many exceptional educational options available for families seeking the numerous advantages, both academic and faith-based, that Catholic schools offer.”
To help ensure that students continue a Catholic school education, the Office of Catholic Schools through the Catholic Schools Support Program will offer $500 in tuition assistance to students transferring to another Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Hartford for the 2015-16 academic year.
Hoyt added, “The Office of Catholic Schools is working closely with the St. John Paul II faculty and current families to assist them during this period of transition. It is our goal to see that each student continues to benefit from the excellence of Catholic school education by transferring to Sacred Heart School (of New Britain) or to one of the other superb elementary schools in the Archdiocese.”
In addition to the assistance provided by the Office of Catholic Schools for students who move to other Catholic schools, families who decide to enroll their students in neighboring Sacred Heart School will be given an additional $500 from Sacred Heart Parish toward tuition, for a total of $1,000 for the 2015-16 academic year.
