This coming Wednesday, Jan. 14 from 6-8 p.m. at City Hall, the Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) Department of Design’s Photography 504 class will hold a reception for “Eleven Photographic Acts and Dialogues,” which is an exhibit that will feature class members’ work from this past semester.

This open-to-the-public free event—which is part of the New Britain Arts Commission’s “Art in the Heart of the City” program—will showcase about 30 photographs from 11 CCSU graduate students and is expected to draw around 50 people to City Hall.

The exhibit—which will be located in the grand and historic space on the second floor of City Hall—will include a variety of student photographs, including pictures of people and landscapes, according to Hannah Hurwitz, a Photography 504 student and member of the New Britain Arts Commission who works as program administrator for the Institute for Municipal and Regional Policy at CCSU.

“I think people should come to the event to support the students,” said Hurwitz. “New Britain is a city that really appreciates the arts, and so when CCSU students in artistic disciplines interact with the city, I think it’s a good thing and we should continue to foster that kind of collaboration.”

The interaction and collaboration between the greater community and CCSU will continue next month and in March when two more exhibits open at City Hall as part of the Art in the Heart of the City program.

“In February the CCSU Art Department is having a show and then the Design Department is having a show in March,” explained Hurwitz. “The plan moving forward is to have these events coincide with the openings of shows or exhibits and ideally an exhibit would be up for two months, maybe three months.”

Those who attend on Jan. 14 will not only be able to enjoy the students’ pictures—they will also be offered free refreshments. “We will be having wine; I know some people might like that,” joked Hurwitz. “The wine is complimentary; everything is complimentary. There will also be hors d’oeuvres and I think some chips and salsa, crackers and fruit; that kind of stuff.”

Those who can’t make it on Jan. 14 are in luck: they can still head over to City Hall during regular business hours to see the students’ work on display.

The title of the exhibit—”Eleven Photographic Acts and Dialogues”— came from the classes’ desire to be as inclusive as possible towards the various styles represented in the display.

“It was actually really hard for us to come up with a title because all of us have such different styles and different subject matter,” said Hurwitz. “Some people took images of people; other people took images of landscapes; and we had another student who did light images, so we tried to come up with a title that covered everything and make it as broad as possible.”
