It’s been a busy month for New Britain schools. Students enjoyed a festive Halloween downtown, and are now back from their Thanksgiving break.

• The entire district recognized Veteran’s Day with special events on November 10. Many schools invited local veterans to come speak with students at special breakfasts, assemblies and outdoor ceremonies. Students learned about the important sacrifices our veterans have made for our freedom. Several schools also held fundraising drives to collect money for Wreaths Across America, an effort to place wreaths at every veteran’s headstone. Several hundred dollars was raised by students.

• Several schools held special events related to Thanksgiving. At Lincoln Elementary School, students enjoyed a feast in the commons, and learned about Thanksgiving traditions. Kindergarten students at Smith Elementary School learned about turkeys, with a visit from a live turkey from Indian Rock Nature Preserve.

• Holmes Elementary School hosted its annual Junior Achievement Day. More than two-dozen Farmington Bank employees taught students about community resources, economics and being an entrepreneur.

• Students in Gaffney Elementary School’s KEY Program had a visit from the child-friendly robot, “Chris.” “Chris” was provided by Movia Robotics.

• At Smalley Academy, reading teachers facilitated the program, “Stop, Drop and Read.” This school-wide event promoted reading at home for 20 minutes each day, to help students strengthen their literacy skills in order to meet grade level expectations.

• Vance Village School is working hard to improve attendance. Chronically absent students meet weekly with Principal Sarah Harris to set goals for the week. Seven out of 11 chronically absent students met their goals for November, earning them lunch from Max’s Pizza.

• At DiLoreto School, bullying awareness presentations were made to all students in honor of bullying awareness month. Students also made anti-bullying posters.

• Two Slade Middle School music teachers, Jen Austin and Ryan Kowalczyk, were awarded a flute, trumpet and guitar, after winning a Horns for Kids grant.

• NBHS Satellite Careers Academy recognized 102 students who passed all of their classes for the first marking period. Fourteen students earned Honors and 15 earned High Honors.
