Broad St. Construction Moving Forward

Little Poland got a boost this week as LTC Construction of New Britain was named the lowest bidder and has received the go ahead to be the firm to do the final phase of the Broad Street reconstruction.
The $3.7 million project will begin in the Spring and will be on Broad St. from Grove St. to the top of Burritt St.
“This is the third and final phase of the project,” said Mayor Erin Stewart. “It has taken 20 years to get to this point.”
LTC Construction, under Leo Comosci, has also done the first two phases of this construction.
The project is basically the same as the other two projects. The area will take on the historic characteristics of those built on Washington St. and on the area of Broad Street section near Main Street that includes new lamp posts.
“It will work on the lamp posts, sidewalks, bring the sidewalk closer to the road and become more pedestrian friendly,” said Stewart. “Pulaski Park will get a re-do, making it more pedestrian friendly with sidewalks. Right now it does not have sidewalks.”
One item that will not be done in this area is the utilities. On the other parts of Broad St., reconstruction utilities were put underground.
“It would have increased the cost by millions and millions of dollars,” said Stewart. “We had to take that out of the equation.”
But, Stewart said she has spoken to Connecticut Light and Power and Comcast and asked they clean up the wires on the top of the poles.
“They look like a maze,” Stewart added.
If everything stays on schedule the project is expected to be done in less than a year.
There may be some traffic delays and closures of the streets.
“We have a lot of great construction projects happening as soon as Spring begins,” said Stewart.
Much of the downtown streetscape project is expected to start in Spring including the area around Central Park and the bridge over Route 72.
