Campbell Square Monument Restoration Nearly Done

Restoration of the WWII monument at John Campbell Square, located on Stanley Street at Hillcrest Ave. in the Belvidere section of the City, is nearing completion. The monument was severely damaged by a vehicle about three years ago. As reported in the City Journal earlier this year, the City had funds to restore the monument but not to replace the adjacent apron or the landscaping around the monument. Alderman Don Naples is leading an effort to raise funds from the public to cover these items, as well as replacing the sign for the site.
The Journal published on May 9, 2024 the names of 346 Belvidere residents who served in World War II and asked for donations. $5,100 has been collected to date, and an anonymous donor has offered to pay for the landscaping portion. An additional $1,900 is needed to complete the unfunded items.
The monument will be rededicated in a special ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 6th, starting at 1:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Time is getting short, so if you would like to donate in memory or in honor of someone who served in WWII, or any other person, please make your check payable to New Britain Parks & Recreation Department and mail or deliver it to Sandy Keefe, Veterans Affairs Clerk, in Room 302 of City Hall as soon as possible. If this is not convenient, you can send an email message to Alderman Naples at [email protected] or call him at 860-229-5000 and he will arrange to pick up your check, log it in and deliver it to City Hall.
“Many thanks to all who have contributed to this worthwhile project.” Said Naples.
