If cars are your passion Downtown New Britain is the place to be Saturday.
The New Britain Downtown is holding the 8th Annual New Britain Downtown Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Central Park.
“It’s a tremendous positive event that shows weekend after weekend downtown has something that draws people. There is a reason for people to be here. There is always something downtown worth coming to see,” said Gerry Amodio, downtown district director. “Last weekend people came for Oktoberfest. Next weekend they may come for Engelbert and Friends performing at Trinity on Main. This is the message we are trying to send out to people. There is something always going on always here.”
New this year will be live 60’s Band “Curl Daddy”. They will be playing surfing music from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
As usual “Chrome will be King” as Antique Cars from 20’s and 30’s, Classic Cars from the 40’s, Muscle Cars from the 50’s, Street Rods from the 60’s and the extreme Tuners of more recent vintage take over downtown New Britain. Joining these retro machines, will be an exciting display of up-to-the-minute people-movers including an impressive display of state of-the-art buses to be used on the CT Fastrak, planned for completion in March of 2015.
The event is operated by Constitution State Classics Car Club (CSCCC)
Amodio said they are anticipating great attendance from New Britain middle school families who were all given handouts during the summer’s PASSPORT project.
Food vendors will include such foods at barbecue ribs, chicken, pizza, fried dough, hot dogs and hamburgers from the Mason’s, Papa’s Trolley, and a classic Good Humor Ice Cream truck.
“We are aiming for 200 cars,” said Amodio. “We’ve had just over 200 and our goal is to break 200 this year.”
About 2,000 people turn out for the event which features prizes for the cars including the Mayor’s Trophy.
As always, all proceeds benefit the New Britain Police Explorers. New Britain’s historic Central Park, adjacent to City Hall, serves as the backdrop and local restaurants, exhibitors, vendors, a DJ and LIVE BAND will add to the free family fun. See if your favorite car is awarded the coveted Mayors Trophy.
