Police Station Key to Future of Downtown
As the city prepares for the start of construction on the new $35 million police station in November, one wonders what is next on the revitalization plan for the city.
In 2008, a Downtown Development Project Plan was put in place outlining some of the hopes of Mayor Timothy Stewart.
New Britain will not have big commercial retail business, said Stewart. Those businesses go into big malls and strip malls.
What is hoped for New Britain is smaller stores much like what is found in West Hartford.
People go to West Hartford because there is a choice of businesses to shop at, said Stewart. People feel safe. New Britains mean income is about half of that of West Hartford, so it will be a challenge.
Once the police station goes up on the corner of Main and Chestnut Street, the next plan is for the building planned next to it.
The police station building will be about 85,000 square feet and four stories tall. The portion of the main floor will provide roughly 2,000 square-feet of retail space.
Ive had interest from several businesses about that space, said Stewart.
A residential complex next to it, that would predominantly hold one-bedroom apartments, is the next item in the revitalization of downtown.
Planning over time has never been that successful in New Britain, said Stewart. There is no magic bullet to make the city successful. It is based on the willingness to take some chances.
